Room Painting Tips

Generally, when painting a room, you should apply a primer to the walls, to allow for better adherence by the paint.  However, now there is an alternative that you may want to try.  Many hardware stores now sell products that have a combination of primer and paint.  This eliminates the primer step and speeds up the process of painting.

Instead of choosing a pre-made coffee table, choose something unique. Old luggage or an old chest can actually make a great storage bin as well as a one of a kind coffee table. Throw your magazines, books and accessories on top to give your coffee table definition. You can go as far as adding a tablecloth and teacups to give it a country look.

Bugs tend to plague every household. A great way to ensure that you have it under control is by vacuuming and moving things around daily. Also, pinecones are actually a great remedy to keep bugs away. Collect pinecones and display them in a bowl to: repel the bugs, and add a chic touch to your decor.

Self adhesive drywall patches are a must-have home improvement. These patches come in many forms ranging from mesh drywall tape to those made of a polymer material. Press them carefully into place using an iron. Be careful not to scorch the patch or the wall surface. Paint right over the patch and you'll never know it's there.

If you are working in the kitchen and bathroom during your home improvement project, make sure to turn off the water. Any time your work involves the pipes or water supply in your home, you need to locate the shutoff before starting your work. This step will help you prevent a flood.

To prevent air from escaping through your doors, buy draft excluders and sealant strips.  Draft excluders fit underneath a door and stop hot air from leaking out and cold air from leaking in.  Sealant strips fit around door frames and do the same function.  They can be found at any hardware store.

If you have a cabinet door that just won't stay closed, try replacing the cabinet lock.  You might want to try using a magnetic cabinet lock, as they generally last longer than wheel based cabinet lock systems.  Simply remove the old lock and attach the new lock in the same location.  Use wood screws if needed to create new holes.

A very simple home improvement tip is to declutter. Start with this easy task: If you have kids, you may be guilty of cluttering your fridge with their work and little design magnets. Keep your appliances clear by attaching just some of your children's artwork and only a few magnets at a time. You can switch these items out every week. 

Seek out advice before starting on do it yourself projects.  There may be important steps you will overlook if you don't know what you are doing.  Although many household jobs can be done yourself, it is always a good idea to ask an expert how to do the job properly.
